Following talks with President of Egypt Hosni Mubarak, President Vladimir Putin noted that the UN Security Council resolution will only be effective if it makes it possible for the Iraqi people to take their destiny in their own hands and if it creates a mechanism for restoring genuine sovereignty to Iraq. The Russian delegation at the United Nations will work to ensure that just such a resolution is drafted, Mr Putin said.
Presidents Vladimir Putin and Hosni Mubarak support the idea of convoking an international conference involving broad participation from the Iraqi people, the neighbouring countries, the UN Security Council members and other countries. But all transformations should be initiated from within the region itself and should help regulate the crisis and work towards social and economic progress, Mr Putin said.
