Marshal Alexander Vasilevsky (1895–1977), twice awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, served as Chief of the General Staff during the Great Patriotic War (1942–1945) and played a central role in planning and executing nearly all major operations on the Soviet-German front.

Between February 20 and April 26, 1945, he commanded the 3rd Belorussian Front and led the assault on the city and fortress of Königsberg (April 6–9, 1945). In the latter half of 1945, Vasilevsky was appointed Commander-in-Chief of Soviet forces in the Far East during the campaign against Japan. Renowned as one of the most prominent World War II commanders, he served as USSR Minister of the Armed Forces and Minister of War in 1949–1953.
