Greetings to active and retired sport sector workers and athletes

Vladimir Putin sent greetings to active and retired sport sector workers and athletes on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of establishing a state physical fitness and sport management agency.

The message reads, in part:

“We can be rightfully proud of the rich history of national sport. This country occupies a leading place in terms of the number of Olympic champions and world champions. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Russia already had numerous clubs, leagues and societies bringing together amateur athletes in various disciplines. Russian athletes took part in prestigious competitions and won at the Olympic Games. Russian wrestlers and chess players, figure skaters and speed skaters became famous all over the world.

The establishment of the Supreme Physical Fitness Council under the All-Union Central Executive Committee in June 1923 was an important stage in the development of elite competitive sport. The creation of a state system for managing the sport sector largely facilitated the establishment of specialised education institutions in various regions of the country and made it possible to build stadiums and ice palaces, as well as training and health improvement (wellness) facilities. Today, this infrastructure is being upgraded and elevated to a new level. This helps strengthen the wonderful traditions of the physical fitness movement and train future champions and record-holders, coaches and mentors. It is gratifying that the current generation of sport sector workers cherish the priceless experience and creative legacy of their predecessors and successfully accomplish their objectives.”
