President Putin with Helmut Schmidt, a former German chancellor and chairman of the non-governmental international organisation InterAction Council.
President Putin at a meeting with representatives of the non-governmental international organisation InterAction Council.

Addressing the meeting, President Putin said that the world community must work together to improve the system of international law so that it would remain an effective tool for solving current problems.

He also stressed that the United Nations must play a central role among the existing unifying international institutions.

President Putin said it was possible and necessary to discuss ways of modernising the UN. But that, he said, should not diminish the current effectiveness of the organisation.

The InterAction Council is a non-governmental international organisation created in 1983 by the initiative of Takeo Fukuda, a former Japanese Prime Minister. At its annual meetings more than 30 former heads of state and government come up with recommendations for major political, economic and social issues. These recommendations are sent to various heads of state and government and heads of international organisations.
