Mr Putin and Mr Abbas talked about two hours.
The President of the Russian Federation is the first leader of the intermediary states who visits Palestine since Mr Abbas’ election in January, 2005.
Before the negotiations Mr Putin laid a wreath at the grave of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
Accompanied by head of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas, Vladimir Putin entered Yasser Arafat’s mausoleum and honoured the memory of the Palestinian leader with a minute of silence.
The temporary mausoleum “Darih Abu Amar” has been built over Arafat’s grave – a glass pavilion which protects the headstone, covered in living flowers, from the sun’s rays. The mausoleum is situated directly on the territory of the Mukatah residence of the leadership of the PNA.
