Greetings to participants and guests of the 7th International Meeting of Representatives of Arctic Council Member States, Observer States and Foreign Scientific Community

Vladimir Putin sent a message of greetings to participants and guests of the 7th International Meeting of Representatives of Arctic Council Member States, Observer States and Foreign Scientific Community.

August 30, 2017
07:30

The message reads, in part:

“It is symbolic that this forum is being held in Sabetta, where a large-scale Yamal LNG energy project is being implemented, a project that has become a vivid example of mutually beneficial international cooperation and of caring attitude to the vulnerable ecosystem in the Arctic. It is this constructive and open approach that is needed for effective economic development of the Arctic.

The agenda of your meeting features important issues related to building up multilateral cooperation in the areas of infrastructure development, environmental protection, and safe production and transportation of Arctic hydrocarbon resources. I am confident that new and interesting ideas will be voiced during the upcoming discussions and that these ideas will be implemented in practice.

Russia traditionally has focused on the comprehensive development of its Arctic territories and has been implementing here a long-term strategy to extend transport routes and create conditions for socioeconomic and industrial growth. But, as before, our key priority is to protect the unique nature of the North, as well as the original lifestyles of the indigenous peoples. I would like to emphasise that we are ready for the closest possible interaction with all countries concerned, including those not belonging to the Arctic region, as we proceed to implement these plans.”
