The Centre of Environmental Research of the University of Turku is located on tiny Seili Island, which has an area of just 1.6 km sq. The centre carries out a range of scientific research into the Gulf of Finland marine territory, focusing primarily on aquatic ecology, long-term monitoring and simulation of the environmental situation in the Baltic Sea, and also historical, cultural, and archaeological research.
Mr Medvedev and Ms Halonen also visited a church museum on the grounds of the first Finnish hospital on Seili Island.
