Dmitry Medvedev held talks in Rome with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Mr Medvedev and Mr Berlusconi witnessed the signing of several joint agreements. The Russian President and Italian Prime Minister also took part in the opening ceremony of the Year of Russian Culture and Language in Italy and the Year of Italian Culture and Language in Russia. The following day, Mr Medvedev visited the Vatican, where he met with Pope Benedict XVI and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.
