I am happy to see you here ahead of the APEC summit.
I have not held this post for very long. We stand for security and peace in the world, and it is a pleasure to see you here.
Regarding our bilateral relations, we are interested not only in sustaining them, but also in developing them.
Our relations have a long history, primarily in defense. We highly appreciate the technologies available in Russia; you have made significant achievements in technologies. We are striving to develop our cooperation not only in defense but also in other areas, above all, in agriculture. Peru is an important exporter of agricultural produce such as fruit – mango, avocado and others. In addition, our nations are on either side of the Pacific Ocean.
As you know, we are a mining country, we occupy a leading position in oil extraction and zinc exports, but these markets develop on their own.
As for international relations, we are not a very significant actor, however, we support the United Nations Organisation, and we send our troops for peacekeeping operations.
We are interested in developing good relations with Russia in defense and other trade areas.
President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Mr President,
First of all, let me congratulate you on the way you have organised the APEC activities. You have chosen very promising and timely issues of qualitative growth, market access, equal opportunities and so on. Let me wish you success in the final stage: the APEC summit.
You have already mentioned, Mr President, that our countries have very warm relations. I have noted the address you made after being elected President, when you said how you would like to pursue the established level of relations between Russian and Peru. Now, undoubtedly, we have to transform that very good level of political interaction into the economic component.
Mr President, we are waiting for you to appoint the Peru co-chair of the intergovernmental commission. Its next meeting is scheduled to take place in Moscow. Many Russian companies express interest in working in the Peruvian market. I am confident that if we render government support to this attitude on both sides, there are bound to be results.
